The Chinese Lunar Calendar reputedly dates back beyond 2,6000 BC making it the oldest chronological record in history. Each year in the 12-year lunar cycle is represented by a different animal, the order of which was determined by a race involving all animals across a river. Unbeknownst to the ox, the crafty mouse leaped onto its back and rode its metaphorical coattail to victory by jumping off and crossing the line first right at the very end of the race. The tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig followed the cunning mouse and tired ox across the river to dry land.
